This may sound crazy, but it’s absolutely true. I’ve experienced this firsthand. On a recent trip to Phoenix, I pulled off the I-8 to let the dogs out and let the kid get her wiggles out. I’d stopped at this place before; it has some abandoned buildings I like to look at. About ten minutes after I’d stopped, a sheriff’s SUV pulled up and a very nice lady sheriff asked me politely but with some urgency if I could gather my wayward puppies and child and leave immediately.
I asked her why, as I’m pretty familiar with Arizona and the freedom within its borders. She explained that it was too close to sunset for us to be on that particular side of the freeway, as the drug and human traffickers would be out very soon. “They’ll shoot you if they don’t know you,” she said, “Even if you’re just here with you kid and obviously not a threat.”
Needless to say, I gathered everyone, and even though Mr. HG needed some convincing on account of his problems with authority, we got out of there posthaste.
All the way to Phoenix, I was angry. Not at the sheriff, who was overworked, understaffed and underfunded, or the Border Patrol that experiences the same problems, but at these open borders idiots who live north of the 33rd parallel and have had no exposure to the reality of life on the border. Even libtards that live in the border areas have very little understanding of just what their idealism has created. They tend to see border crime and illegal immigration as two separate issues, often blaming the anti-illegal immigration people for the crime, instead of giving credit where credit is so obviously due.
It’s maddening. I can’t let my dogs out to pee south of I-8 in my home state or I risk getting shot by asshole traffickers. Do you understand the gravity of the situation along our southern border? Do you understand that the drug war that has been raging in Mexico for the last several years–the drug war that keeps me from spending time in my favorite Baja town of Rosarito–will move north? It already has. And it will impact the lives of all you open borders, hippie losers at some point. Mexico doesn’t just import your nannies and yard workers; it imports its crime and murder as well.
Giving up and conceding our borders is disgusting and shameful. That’s my home, you open borders, progressive, “compassionate” f*ckers. It doesn’t matter where I live now, Arizona will always be my home and what happens there is extremely important to me. When its borders are overrun and the government refuses to enforce the law–well then, there’s going to be trouble. It hurts to see the little towns that dot the highway becoming nothing but modern day ghost towns, and it makes me very angry.
It’s a slow burn on the border, but it’s getting hotter by the hour. People will either clear out or they’ll take care of themselves. I’m betting on the latter.
[Of course, Steyn mentioned this on Rush before I got a chance to post it. Damn him and his awesomeness.]

Im a animal lover thats why i love my dog and cats.
A few friends of mine did some volunteer work at the Dream Center in Phoenix, and they were informed that Phoenix is the second busiest city in the U.S. when it comes to human trafficking. After reading your post, it just made that reality settle in more in the most chilling way. Wow.
You’re right though. It’s your home state, and it’s a tragedy that the sick crimes that our nation shuns are being allowed to cross into your homeland. Damn.
We occasionally drive somewhat aimlessly around the Virginia countryside. And occasionally, when we’re exploring some alternate route, there will be a drastic change in the condition of the road — which is to say, the road suddenly becomes a gravelly and/or washboarded dirt track, for which the car has neither the clearance nor the suspension — marked by a small sign reading: END OF STATE MAINTENANCE.
I’ve always wondered how the State determines what portions of a road it will and will not pave, patch, and plow. And I always wonder whether the people who live along this feral stretch of road feel abandoned by the bureaucracy.
But they’ve got to feel better than any of the people who live south of Phoenix, where the only thing this administration has managed to put between them and the murderous barbarians invading from the south are “END OF FEDERAL GIVE-A-DAMN” signs.
Great post.
Keep writing.
