Don’t worry about Rick making you convert to Catholicism. It ain’t gonna happen.

It’s not as crazy as it sounds.

(The following presupposes that one believes in something more than our meager existence. If you don’t believe in God, more than likely you still have a clear-ish concept of good and evil, and I’ve no quarrel with you. But you don’t have to read any further.)

I have a hard time committing myself to spiritual warfare scenarios, mostly because it sounds so crazy when you say it out loud. But there is something beyond the crappy existence we’ve got here, and if there is a God, then there is an anti-God because nature dictates it. Nature is full of binary systems. So if God is good and there is evil in the world — you have to be a complete moron to deny that evil exists — from whence does evil emanate?

If our country began as a Judeo-Christian nation — which it did, regardless of what the revisionists say — wouldn’t the Judeo-Christian anti-God want to destroy it? How would it do that? In a manner that would not raise alarm. In the name of progress and rationalism and equality; all good things.

If you’re uncomfortable with Santorum’s obviously genuine faith, take heart in the fact that he has, on several occasions, reiterated that he understands not everyone shares his beliefs and he will not attempt to force those beliefs on anyone. He is just being authentic. Is it somehow scary and weird that Keith Ellison is a practicing Muslim? That Eric Cantor is Jewish? Is it scary that Joe Lieberman reportedly didn’t work on the Sabbath? Is it scary that Barry went to a radical black liberation theology church for 20 years and has declared that his social agenda is inspired by Jesus?

Well, the last one’s kind of weird, but the other examples are not. I don’t care if Keith Ellison is Muslim, as long as he’s a good representative of his district in Minnesota. The fact that Rick Santorum is a devout Christian can only make him a better, more humane, more principled leader. He’s not going to pull a Henry VIII and mandate we all convert to Catholicism. (I know that Hank went the opposite way, okay? Don’t fill my comment section with “corrections.”) No, that’s Barry’s job. (Mark Steyn has a great column here on the subject.)

Regardless, the media and the Left will paint Santorum as “the crazy Christian” with the seven homeschooled kids and a wacky belief that life begins at conception and nutty theories on God and the Devil. Don’t let yourself get distracted by the caricatures. Don’t buy the media characterizations. Don’t be a tool.

  1. Now my only question is whether Mark Steyn was doing “tooth-level surveillance” with that comely Engligh Catholic lass behind that upstairs fireplace.
I suppose that depends on whether he keeps his eyes open or closed, and if the candle was lit.

  2. Does it matter that Santorum was out of politics in 2008, having lost his last election on November 7, 2006 ? Does it matter that most sites are presenting this as if it just happened? No? Did it matter that Tebow wasn’t praying to win football games–just thanking God for the opportunity to play and help someone each day (usually the person he flew to the game and their family)?

  3. I shouldn’t worry about Santorum having the effect of making Catholics of Protestants, Pagans, Secularists, or Atheists. The Church has trouble enough just making Catholics into Catholics.
